Boot o’ Doom Visits The ‘Milks
This weekend was one I’d been looking forward to for a while because some of my climber friends would be rolling into town for the weekend. It’d give me a nice break from the long spell of being cooped up at home most of the time. On Sunday, I told them to drag me out to the ‘Milks so I could get some sun and fresh air. It also marked my first return to the the climbing area since I broke my foot three weeks ago.
It was a typical brilliant Bishop spring day. Sun was fierce, the sky was clear and the air cool. Another great day to climb.
The hardy desert plants were starting to flower.
As always, the natural attraction of Iron Man Traverse was seeing lots of attempts that day.
And when everyone’s all climbed out, what better is there to do than a little ping-pong outside?
A late rush to the mountaintop to catch the setting sun. Only problem was that we were too late and missed it.
So how about some beer and pizza?

So nice of your friends!
I notice the new watermark you just started adding; very fitting!
I wish I knew how you always get these crisp and clean images!
I toospent the weekend watching people climb while I couldn’t. I can’t imagine doing so at the buttermilks! Hopefully you enjoy the rest of your time in Bishop.
Did ya take a floor shot of that Boot-o’-Doom on some rocks? Tint the rocks red on PS. Then describe it as a Martian shot? Heh, heh.
Seems like you were itching to get out of the four walls and friends dropping in for a climb was the perfect excuse. Hope yer foot ’s healing well, don’t push it too early, fella.
Your sig’s your watermark? Nice touch.
narc: it won’t come cheap, but high quality glass will make a significant difference. better yet, shoot with a prime. the image quality loss in terms of sharpness and color contrast by using a zoom lens can be significant. secondly, a full-frame (35mm sensor) will deliver better results than a cropped sensor due to increased light-gathering area. downside is, those two options are also very costly. (Check out the Canon 5D, Canon 1Ds Mark-III, or the Nikon D3).
ann_c: yup, thats my pseudo-signature. my actual signature is a bit more scrawl-ish.
Thanks for the info tim - Just spent a fair amount of money on trad gear so I guess I will just have to do my best with my D70 for now! I do have one prime lense which I have found has good results however it obviously has the limitation that you have to be able to move yourself to zoom in and out which can be difficult at times
nice to see you finally get out to buttermilk country… my question remains… did you actually get to hike up to the ironman traverse all by yourself along with the crutches?
yup, crutched my ass all the way over from the grandpa peabody to the iron man traverse, then all the way over to saigon, then back down to grandpa again. i didn’t climb, but i still got a good workout!
Geez, the armpits got a workout all right. :))
He didnt climb if you dont count doing iron man footless to the lip as climbing! Awesome pics as usual! Look forward to getting back out there…
awesome pictures tim! i just got a new lens: 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM… been looking at tons of lens, was drooling over prime f/2.8 but going to europe soon so will need the zoom etc for those cool buildings and details! will definitely ask u for lens advice before i get my next one. my workhorse lens for last 2 yrs: 17-85 mm IS- great lens but the new one is better- bokeh: WOW. i just bought an XTi (brand new off of craigs list) for $300- body only.. the deal was too good! but my next cam is 5D or Mark, no ques.
